Marlene Streeruwitz

Marlene Streeruwitz was born in Baden, near Vienna. She studied Slavic Studies and Art History in Vienna and worked as a playwright for radio stations such as WDR and ORF. Since 1992, her plays were performed on all major theater stages, including premières at Schauspiel Köln, Münchner Kammerspiele, Deutsches Theater Berlin and Wiener Festwochen.

Her first novel, Seductions (1996) won the Mara Cassens Prize in 1997. Marlene Streeruwitz has been honored with numerous awards, such as the Hermann Hesse Prize for Literature (2001). In addition to her work as a writer Marlene Streeruwitz has also held lectures at the renowned Frankfurt Lectures on Poetics. Her most recently published books are: Me, Johanna (Ich, Johanna Ey, 2009), Crossings (Kreuzungen, 2010), That Won’t Happen to Me… (Das wird mir alles nicht passieren…Wie bleibe ich FeministIn, 2010), and The Hurtress (Die Schmerzmacherin, 2011).
